Gum disease affects millions of Americans and can lead to serious health concerns, including heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and Alzheimer’s disease. According to the American Academy of Periodontology, there is a direct link between the bacteria in your mouth that cause gum disease and these conditions.

Because of this, it’s essential to understand how to detect and treat aggressive periodontitis. Keep reading to learn more.

Detecting Periodontitis

Many of my patients don’t even realize they are suffering from gum disease, so paying attention to these signs can help:

  • Sensitive gums
  • Bleeding gums
  • Receding gums
  • Red or swollen gums
  • Loose teeth
  • Bad breath

Because I am a periodontist, I am specially trained to diagnose and treat gum disease. When you visit my dental office, I will examine your mouth for signs of gum recession and check your dental bite. I also use a special dental tool known as a periodontal probe to check the spaces between your teeth and gums. This helps me determine whether gum disease is present.

Treatment Options from Quality Dental Care

My goal is to restore your gums to full health, so if you have periodontal disease, I offer the following treatment options:

Gingivitis — For this early stage of gum disease, I recommend a professional dental cleaning. I will also discuss with you how to commit to good oral hygiene practices.

Periodontitis — For this more advanced gum disease, I will perform a procedure known as scaling and root planing. In this procedure, I will remove the plaque and tartar that has built up on your teeth. My next step will be to smooth the roots of your teeth to keep further bacteria from collecting and allow your gums to reattach to your teeth.

If that’s not enough, I am specially trained to perform several surgical procedures, including gum grafts or gum lifts.
